MUNCIE — Ball State senior-to-be golfer TJ Carpenter, a Triton High School graduate, has been named to the Academic All Mid-American Conference team.
The academic all-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Carpenter, who owns a 3.224 GPA as an accounting major, managed a career low 69 at the Renaissance Invitational in October. He tallied a career best finish at the Earl Yestingsmeier in April when he tied for eighth.

Dustin Kreft, former Trojan and Charger, signs with Grace baseball

Grace’s baseball team has added former Triton High School athlete Dustin Kreft to its roster.
Dustin, who played the last two seasons for Ancilla College, was an honorable mention for All-Conference at Triton. He led the team in batting average and was the team’s MVP during his career.
Last season at Ancilla, he batted .313 and led the team in doubles (eight) and runs scored (19).
“I am looking forward to playing baseball at Grace this year,” Dustin said. “It seemed like a good fit for me, and the academics helped make my decision easier.”
Dustin is the son of Tim and Lisa Kreft. He plans to major in criminal justice at Grace.

Carpenter Finishes 24th at State Golf Finals

FRANKLIN — Time is on Quentyn Carpenter’s side. It just wasn’t Wednesday.
The Triton sophomore’s start was delayed five hours due to weather at the second round of the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys State Golf Finals, and he struggled to follow up his even-par 72 first round with a 7-over 79 at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course to slip from 19th to 24th in Franklin.
“It was a long day today,” he said. “I didn’t go to sleep or anything; I just tried to stay awake during the whole break. I hung around the Warsaw guys and just tried to have fun with them and talk and have a good time. I got out there today and I started out good. I was playing good today with the conditions the way they were and just couldn’t finish strong at the end.”
“I wouldn’t say I was tired,” he added. “I came down the stretch and I just didn’t make the shots I wanted to make. I hit the driver everywhere today and the irons. I putted really well throughout the playoffs and today I just didn’t putt well at all, and unfortunately today was the wrong day for it.”
Originally scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. tee time, Carpenter was forced to wait around until well into the afternoon in the sloppy conditions. He double-bogeyed No. 5 a second straight day at The Legends but unlike his opening round added double bogeys on 3 and 13. His only birdie came on the 364-yard par 4 14th hole after posting a trio of birdies to advance out of the first round Tuesday.
“It did hurt,” said Triton head golf coach and Carpenter’s father Jack Carpenter of Wednesday’s delay. “He had the first tee time at 7:30, so we’re here at 6:30 this morning. Then we finally got him off I think at 12:30.
“I told him that as we walked up to the first tee ‘With the delay that we had today and with it being rainy, it’s going to be about your mental approach just as much as it is the physical game.’ He got off to an OK start. He saved himself, made a couple long putts and then he misses a couple short putts that were for birdie. So a 38 could have probably been 36 or it probably could have been 40 also, so it kind of evens out.”
The good news for Quentyn is that he’s still got plenty of golf ahead of him.
He won a two-hole playoff to advance out of the Homestead Regional last Thursday in the IHSAA’s first year of eliminating the rule for automatic advancement for any third-place individual ties in the state series. The Trojans No. 1 finished out his freshman season tied for 19th, becoming the first Triton golfer to make the second day cut at state after advancing with his team last year. He replicated that feat with a gutsy, down-to-the-wire par performance Tuesday before slipping five places on the leaderboard Wednesday.
“He’s the only kid in our school history that’s made it to the second day (at state), and he’s been able to do it twice as a freshman and sophomore,” said Jack. “I know he was disappointed because at one point he was sitting at sixth if you follow the online scoring. If he’d have shot even today, he would have been top 10 easily, because with the weather the scores were much higher today. He’s disappointed, but it’s going to make him work harder. “
“I didn’t play the way I wanted to play, but I’ve got two more years left at Triton and a lot of golf ahead of me, and hopefully I can become a better golfer over these two years,” Quentyn said. “We’ll see what I can do; hopefully, I can get back down here and win some big things and make some history.”
A two-year varsity point guard for Triton basketball who helped lead the Trojans to the 2010-11 Class A State Finals prior to the start of the golf season, Quentyn recently decided to forego hoops to focus exclusively on his golf game. He’ll start off-season play on Friday when he plays in the Indiana Open Championship qualifier.
“I spoke to (Triton basketball coach Jason Groves) and told him this is what I want to be,” said Qunetyn. “Today left a bad taste in my mouth, and I just want to get it out as soon as possible. I want to get out and get another tournament in.
“It’ll be a big summer for me, and hopefully I can do some things.”

Q. Carpenter Survives to Make Cut to 2nd Day at State Golf Finals

FRANKLIN — Whatever happens next, it’s already one for the history books.Triton sophomore Quentyn Carpenter survived a rough stretch at the end of his round at The Legends to post an even-par 72 and make the cut out to the second day at the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys State Golf Finals in Franklin Tuesday. Link to the State Finals Score Card: http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/leaderboards/player/static/player2704.html
Today’s round represents the fourth state finals round for Carpenter, who made the cut to the second day in his freshman season last year after advancing with the Triton team in its program-first state berth. Already the only Triton golfer to have made the second-day cut at the finals, the sophomore has now done so twice.
“It’s pretty good. My dad told me this morning that I can make history for Triton golf because there are a few guys that have made it down here individually to the first day, but no one has made it twice,” said a smiling Carpenter. “I’m the only one who has made it to the second day, and I’ve done it twice.”
Carpenter started on the back nine at The Legends and parred every hole to enter the turn at an even 36. He posted birdies on No. 1 and 4 and parred 2 and 3 in between to enter the final five holes with a safe 2-under-par score but gave up both strokes when he hooked his tee shot on No. 5 out of bounds and into the trees and wound up posting a double bogey on the hole.
He birdied the long par 5 No. 6 but again he surrendered that stroke right back with a bogey on a short par 3 7 despite scrambling with a beautiful chip out of the thick rough following an errant tee shot. With no more strokes to give, the heady young Triton top-flighter parred out the remaining two holes to grind out an even-par 72 and qualify for today’s second round, a gutsy performance coming on the heels of a Homestead Regional where he won a two-hole playoff just to grab the final individual berth out to state.
“He’s played golf enough to know that you’re going to catch bad breaks,” said Carpenter’s acting coach and cousin T.J. Carpenter, who made the cut out to state for Triton as an individual in 2008. “He had a couple good breaks earlier in the day and he knew that. He came up to the tee after making double, and I said ‘You know what? It all evens out at the end of the day. This is where you find out whether players are good or not.’”
“Coming down the stretch I had my cousin with me, and he just told me ‘Get pars, get pars’ and that even pars should hopefully do it for me,” said Quentyn.
Carpenter is the son of Triton head coach Jack Carpenter, who took a back seat to nephew and Ball State golfer T.J. at Tuesday’s meet, a strategy the family members employed for Quentyn’s second round in 2010 as well.
“It’s still nerve-wracking watching him as a parent,” said Jack. “I’m still trying to coach him along and know exactly what the game plan is between him and I and T.J. Every once in awhile he overrules us, but for the most part he stayed with what we talked about as far as hitting off the tee.
“It’s fun to sit back and give it to T.J. even though I’m still trying to tell T.J. things,” he continued with a smile. “I told him ‘I don’t know why I’m talking to you because you know exactly what you’re doing.’ I think it just makes me feel better.”
Quentyn enters today’s final round in a 10-way tie for 19th place. He wound up tied for 14th on last year’s final leaderboard.
“Today I shot even par. My goal was no higher than 74, but my score could’ve been a lot better,” said Quentyn. “I hiccuped on a few holes and made some bad scores but tomorrow I expect at least the same thing if not better.”
Q. Carpenter wins 3-way playoff to earn state finals berth at Homestead

Triton finishes out team season along with CMA at regional

FORT WAYNE — The preparation is all.
When Quentyn Carpenter played poorly during his practice round at Orchard Ridge Wednesday, he asked his father and Triton head boys golf coach Jack Carpenter to take him out for another round. Those extra holes might have paid big dividends for him Thursday, as the sophomore earned a three-way playoff victory in two holes at the Homestead Boys Golf Regional Thursday to survive and advance individually to the state finals next Tuesday.
While Triton finished its team season in fourth place, one spot away from a second consecutive state finals appearance. Carpenter sunk his six-foot par putt on Number 2 at Orchard Ridge to clinch the third individual ticket out to next week’s meet at The Legends in Franklin.
”He works so hard,” said Jack Carpenter. “People probably don’t understand the kind of time he puts into it. He wakes up at 6:30 in the morning, and he’s in a routine. We played 18 holes here yesterday, and he said ‘Dad, I played like crap, take me over to Sycamore hills.’ So I took him over to Sycamore Hills for two hours. I looked at him, and I said ‘You’re going to be worn out,’ and he said ‘No dad, I’m not a weenie,’ He’s just a tough-minded kid. This is a good sport for him because he’s a grinder.”
”It’s just about surviving and advancing,” said Quentyn. “The first ball I didn’t hit too well, but I was hoping they would fault too, and they did. We got to this hole (2), and I just made the shots, I guess.”
It was the first year such a playoff was necessary as the low three individuals from non-advancing teams, including all ties for third low score, have historically been guaranteed advancement in the IHSAA boys golf tournament. But the rule change was announced just prior to this year’s 75th annual state series as tourney fields around the state were becoming too crowded and throwing off tee times throughout the series.
Quentyn didn’t let the new standard get inside his head, however, as he grabbed the last spot out to The Legands, where he finished in a tie for 14th as a freshman last year.
”Of course I’m a kid and I’m thinking ‘Why do we got to do this or why we got to do that?’” he said. “But I can’t change the rule do anything about it, so I’ve just go to play.”
While Quentyn advances after earning a second-round cut at last year’s state finals meet, the Trojans fell short of their team goal of a second straight berth to the big meet after winning a program-first sectional championship at Warsaw last week. The squad will bid goodbye to seniors Griffyn Carpenter and Taran Kennedy, who helped lead the team to four-peat Marshall County Tournament championships as well as three of four Northern State Conference titles and this year’s sectional championship finish.
”It just wasn’t meant to be this year I guess, but as I told Griffyn and Taran, they’ve had great careers for us,” said Jack Carpenter. “They’ve done the program so well. I think our last four years they were 44-4 in duals and quals. They’ve got nine or 10 tournaments they’ve won, had a state tournament appearance, been to the regionals three times. The rest of our school’s history wouldn’t match it, so while we’re disappointed in today, we’re definitely pleased in how they brought the program around.”

Warsaw finishes third at regional; Triton sophomore wins two-hole playoff

FORT WAYNE—The only other local player to advance was Triton sophomore Quentyn Carpenter, who shot 75 and had to win a three-person,two-hole playoff to claim the final individual berth from Thursday’s regional. Northridge’s Logan McBride and East Noble’s Michael Sharp both shot 74 and advanced individually, while Carpenter had to go to overtime and eliminate Garrett’s Bennette Reike and Fairfield’s Brian Ulrich. “Quentyn has been working so hard,” said Triton coach Jack Carpenter, also Quentyn’s father. “People probably don’t realize the amount of time he puts in. Golf is a great sport for him, because he’s a grinder.” Triton, which won the program’s first sectional championship last week by beating Warsaw via a fifth man tiebreaker at Stonehenge, finished fourth has a team Thursday with as core of 312.
Griffyn Carpenter shot 76 for Triton, while Ryan Rapp carded an 80, Taran Kennedy shot 81 and Chandler Slone finished with a 92. A year ago, the Trojans shot 312 at the regional and advanced to state. On that day, however, all five of Triton’s players turned in sub-80 scores. “This is a tough regional,” said Jack Carpenter. “We knew there would be five or six teams that we’d have to battle, but we knew we’re good enough to battle them. We just didn’t play well enough today. Last year we had five scores in the 70s. Today, our depth just didn’t show up.”
